MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica - Arlington Baptist University is proud to recognize the recent mission trip undertaken by our women's volleyball team. Their journey to Jamaica was a testament to their commitment to serving others and spreading the love and message of our Savior. Over the course of their trip, the team members immersed themselves in community service, forged meaningful connections, and returned with cherished memories and insights.
Four Days of Impact in the Flankers Community
The team spent four days in the Flankers community, where they dedicated their time to assisting and engaging with children in a summer school program. These days were filled with activities, learning, and shared moments of joy and support. Despite facing their own challenges, the children in Flankers welcomed the team with open hearts and bright smiles, leaving a lasting impression on the team.
Evening with the Youth of Montego Bay
One memorable evening was spent with a youth group from a church in Montego Bay. The team members and the local youth shared stories, experiences, and words of encouragement, building a bridge of understanding and fellowship.
Personal Reflections and Takeaways
Junior,
Zayda Rojas, shared her most significant takeaway, reflecting on the resilience and kindness of the children despite their hardships. "Mentally and physically, these children have been broken down, but they still manage to keep a smile and be kind all the time. They stay loving even though people have hurt them," she said, highlighting the incredible strength and positivity the children exhibited.
Junior,
Kyra Cerda, recounted a touching interaction with a local youth named AJ. "My favorite memory from the trip was speaking with AJ, who told me and Coach McDaniel about his life and all the hard trials and tribulations he went through. He didn't think he had a purpose until he grew closer to God."
Incoming Freshman, Ashlynn Branch, was struck by the stark contrasts between life in America and Jamaica. "My biggest takeaway was realizing how lucky and spoiled America has been and that most take it for granted. Seeing the kids and knowing they might not have a home to go back to after school and are getting abused at home just opened my eyes. They came in with smiles, and if one didn't know what community they were from, you would think nothing was wrong. It was another lesson from God that you never know what someone is going through, so don't be too quick to judge or react in a negative way," she reflected.
Freshman, Teagan Hill, cherished the connections made with both her team and the local youth group. "My favorite memory from the trip was meeting the team in such a special way and connecting with the TCMI church youth group by talking to them and hearing their stories!" she said, emphasizing the value of shared experiences and the bonds formed.
A Mission of Love and Growth
The mission trip to Jamaica was more than an act of service; it was a journey of personal and spiritual growth for the ABU volleyball team. Their experiences have left an indelible mark, shaping their perspectives and deepening their faith. Arlington Baptist University is incredibly proud of these young women for their dedication, compassion, and the way they represented our school and Jesus.
