ARLINGTON, TX - The Arlington Baptist University women's volleyball team concluded a remarkable 2023 season with a stellar record of 20-5. The Patriots showcased their dominance in the Southwest regional tournament, where they claimed the Southwest Region Championship, securing their ticket to the NCCAA National Tournament in Joplin, MO. Throughout the season, the team exhibited exceptional skill and teamwork earning them recognition as one of the top teams in the nation.
In the NCCAA National Tournament, the Patriots demonstrated their strength by defeating Boyce College with a convincing 3-0 victory and overcoming Faith Bible Baptist College with a solid 3-1 win. Their impressive performance in the tournament showcased their ability to compete at the highest level. Although they faced a tough challenge in the semi-finals against Bob Jones University, resulting in a 3-1 loss, the Patriots left an indelible mark as one of the top teams in the nation.
The season brought forth well-deserved recognition for several players and Coach Kristi McDaniel.
Sara Schmelzer received multiple accolades, including 1st Team All-American, NCCAA All-Tournament, 1st Team All-Region, and Region Player of the Year.
Alexis Mathis and
Madelaine Blanco also earned 1st Team All-Region honors, while
Emily Saenz received 2nd Team All-Region recognition and the Scholar Athlete award.
Reese Couture was also honored as a Scholar Athlete. Coach McDaniel, recognized as the Southwest Region Coach of the Year, expressed pride in the team's accomplishments and commended the dedication and hard work of the players.
As the season comes to a close, Coach McDaniel looks ahead with optimism. She acknowledges the seniors for their excellence on and off the court, expressing confidence in their success in the future. The Patriots are set to use the off-season to regroup, refine their skills, and prepare for the 2024 season with the goal of returning to the National Tournament and bringing home a well-deserved victory.
