History

In 2009, Arlington Baptist University (formally Arlington Baptist College) began a transformative journey under Dr. DL Moody, appointed as president by the board of directors. His vision of establishing a competitive collegiate athletic program was supported by Clifton McDaniel, an ABU alumnus, who now serves as the President of Arlington Baptist University. With a background in Cedar Hill ISD and a State Runner-up finish as an Assistant Coach, President McDaniel was tasked with revitalizing the athletic program.

President McDaniel quickly established the men's basketball and women's volleyball teams at ABU, also serving as the athletic director in 2009. In 2011, the program expanded to include women's basketball, baseball, and men's cross country. Kristi McDaniel, recruited from Midlothian ISD, coached the women's volleyball team, while Barrett Weaver and Jason Covarrubias led the baseball and cross-country programs, respectively.

In 2020, ABU introduced men's and women's soccer programs, followed by the addition of softball in 2021 under coach Davis Beaver. Despite changes over the years, ABU remains committed to excellence in athletics, with numerous championship titles showcasing the dedication and talent of its athletes.

In 2012, ABU's men's cross-country team won the university's first NCCAA National Championship.

Since then, the men's basketball team has won four Regional Championships and been NCCAA National Runner-Up three times. The women's basketball team has won nine Regional Championships, appeared in eleven NCCAA National Tournaments, been National Runner-Up four times, and won five NCCAA National Championships, the latest in 2019.

The women's volleyball team has won five Regional Championships, made six NCCAA National Tournament appearances, reached three Final Fours, has been NCCAA National Runner-Up once and most recently, won the 2024 NCCAA DII National Championship. Both the baseball and women's soccer teams have won a Regional Championship and softball has won two Regional Championships and made two World Series appearances.

ABU's athletic program has experienced remarkable growth and success over the years, continually expanding and excelling across various sports. Looking ahead, the university has ambitious plans to build on-campus facilities for baseball, softball, and soccer, ensuring all sports can be hosted on campus. These developments reflect ABU's commitment to providing resources for its athletes and enhancing the overall student experience. With a strong foundation of achievements and a clear vision for the future, Arlington Baptist University is excited for continued growth and new opportunities in its athletic program.
