Ankeny, IA: Arlington Baptist College claimed their third straight NCCAA DII Women’s Basketball National Championship on Saturday. The No. 1 seeded Patriots battled No. 2 Kentucky Christian University to an 89-70 victory in the championship game. Zayda Gonzales led the way with 27 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists while Kayla Beattie recorded a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds.
Earning a first round bye, Arlington Baptist College handled No. 5 Maranatha Baptist University in the semifinals by the score of 93-53. Zayda Gonzales had team highs in points (21) and steals (7), while the Patriots collectively accumulated a staggering 27 steals and caused the Sabercats to turn the ball over 41 times.
The Patriots’ Zayda Gonzales was named Tournament Most Outstanding Player as she averaged 24 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3.5 assists. Earlier in the week, Gonzales was named Player of the Year and Clifton McDaniel, also of Arlington Baptist College, was named Coach of the Year.
