Arlington, Texas- The women’s basketball team won the 2019 NCCAA Southwest Regional Tournament. Since the beginning of the women’s program they have won every Regional Tournament, 2013-2019.
They started the tournament off against 3. seed, Dallas Christian College, and won 89-63. Arlington’s stifling defense caused Dallas to turn the ball over 27 times. The First Team All-Region point guard turned the ball over 13 times. The Patriots out rebounded the Crusaders 44-33. Arlington was in control of the whole game.
ABU had three players in double figures. Zayda Gonzalez led all scorers with 23 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 steals. She went 6-8 from the 3 point line. Freshman, Jaila Cook, had her best game of the season with 12 poitns, 8 rebounds, and shot 50% from the field. Then, Aaliyiah Clark finished the game with 11 points.
Dallas had four players in double figures with Karly Baker leading the way.
The following day Arlington continued their streak of winning against 1. Randall University. Minus the third quarter, the ladies were in control of the whole game winning 90-71. ABU’s largest lead was 22 at the end of the third quarter. The Patriots had four of five starters in double figures. First Team All-Region selection, Aaliyiah Clark had 29 points, 6 assists, and 5 steals. Freshman, Peniah Waites had 20 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 steals. Senior, Zayda Gonzalez, had 17 points and was 3-5 from the free throw line. Then, senior guard, Daija Stanford finished with 14 points, 7 steals, and 3 assists.
Randall turned the ball over 36 times. They had three players in double figures. Senior, Madi Chalfant led the Lady Saints with 15 points.
Cutting the nets on our home court punched our ticket to the NCCAA National Tournament in Greenville, SC where they are no stranger. They have won the National Championship four years in a row. However, before South Carolina is the ACCA National Tournament in Joplin, MO. Again, they have won that four years in a row.
