Josh Eatherly did his best to will Patriots to a win with a two-hit game, but Patriots dropped a 12-2 contest to Abilene Christian University on Friday afternoon in Abilene, TX.
Eatherly got on base three times in the game for Patriots with a single in the first and a double in the seventh while also driving in a run.
Michael Scruggs looked sharp on the mound in relief of Devin Patton in the third. Abilene Christian University managed just four hits off of Scruggs, who allowed one earned run, walked none and struck out two during his 3 2/3 innings of work.
Nate Cole recorded the win for Abilene Christian University while allowing one run over five innings. He struck out 10, walked three and surrendered four hits total.
Devin Patton ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision, charged with the loss. He allowed 10 runs in 2 1/3 innings, walked two, and struck out one.
The lead stayed with Abilene Christian University after the first, when it scored two runs on a two-run triple by Kyle Giusti.
Abilene Christian University then added five more runs in the bottom of the third. Brandon Grudzielanek’s single got things going, scoring Giusti. That was followed up by Gunnar Buhner’s single, bringing home Connor Messman and Grudzielanek.
One Patriots run crossed the plate in the top half of the fourth, making the score 10-1. An RBI single by Kieth Schulz gave the Patriots some much needed life. Abilene Christian University stopped the rally after Cole got Hestand Foster to strike out.
A one-run seventh inning helped bring the Patriots within nine. An RBI double by Eatherly fueled a Patriots’ comeback, but ACU closed the game out by getting Trevor Moon to fly out and end any further threat.
