The Arlington Baptist University women’s basketball team suffered its first loss at home against NCAA DIII opponent, McMurry University, last night.
The undefeated War Hawks of McMurry came out swinging and the Lady Patriots dug a bit of a hole for themselves as they were down 9-23 after the first quarter. They started to bounce back in the second quarter and ended the half down 22-36.
The Lady Patriots continued to fight their way back into the game, outscoring the War Hawks in the second half. Three 3-pointers from Haley Herrin and few free throws in the fourth quarter cut the Lady Patriot deficit down to 2 points with under 4 seconds left in the game. After a quick foul, McMurry was on the free throw line with 2.6 seconds to go. After the War Hawks missed both free throws, hope was kept alive and an ABU timeout was called to advance the ball to half court. However, the Lady Patriots were unable to score in such little time, and the final score remained at 61-63.
Herrin led all scorers with 14 points. Jakayla Bradford also saw double figures in scoring with 12 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Heaven Scott had a game high 12 rebounds and tied Aaleya Morton for a game high in assists with each dishing out 5. Jayla Johnson came up just short of a double-double with 9 points and 9 rebounds.
The Lady Patriots will be back in action at home at 5:00 pm on Friday against Ozark Christian College for this year’s Homecoming.
